EXHIBITIONS
PORTRAITS OF AMERICA -
26th September 2025 - 30st April 2025
Join us at The Observatory Photography Gallery to embark on a 10,000-mile train journey across the USA, where Edwards makes this vast nation comprehensible through the frame of the train window.
Each photograph captures a unique glimpse of this diverse country; from the urban landscapes of the Eastern cities, to the red rock faces of the Southern deserts; and from the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Volcanoes, to the dusty cattle of the Midwestern plains.
As the train cuts a line through space and time, Edwards captures a portrait of America.
BIOGRAPHY
Katie Edwards is a self-shooting director and creator specialising in cinematic travel storytelling for digital and branded platforms. Her work has been featured by the BBC, The Guardian, The Times, etc.
I'm taking photos through the frame of the train window. Each journey generates thousands of images - fleeting, peripheral moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. Only later, in the edit, do I become the photographer: reaching back through time, isolating details, and weaving fragments into short video works.
Using the train window as a constant frame, I collect gestures - a kiss, a bird in flight, a field of tulips, a stretch of coastline - and stitch them into panoramas and rhythmic sequences. Repetition transforms these moments into patterns. The frame becomes a tool for understanding scale, for making the vast graspable.
These works invite viewers to travel with her, to see the overlooked, and to recognise themselves within the passing landscape. They form a social network atop the rail network - a quiet attempt to connect across distance through shared, framed moments of everyday life and the glass of the train window.
